'Diablo 3' poll: What do you think of the dungeon-crawler?
Thursday, May 17 2012, 12:42 BST
By Matthew Reynolds, Gaming Editor
Diablo 3 saw a worldwide release on PC and Mac earlier this week, ending a lengthy 12-year return of one of Blizzard's most acclaimed franchises, finishing the story established in the previous games and adding all-new features.
Digital Spy wants to know what you think of the game so far. How far are you into the adventure? How does it compare to the previous Diablo games? What character classes and skills have you chosen? And are you still suffering from connection issues, lag or the dreaded Error 37?

'Diablo 3' live blog - What do we make of the new dungeon-crawler?

As well as continuing the story established in previous games, the dungeon-crawler offers stacks of new features, including an online auction house, increased interaction with NPCs through Followers and Artisans, and a post-game Hardcore mode for a ton of new items and equipment to discover.
Whether you've somehow already managed to get a retail copy, or are buying directly from Battle.net, you'll be able to start playing when the servers go live at 11pm GMT today.
We're liveblogging our thoughts on the game's opening segments until 2am - from creating our first character to sampling the first few quests - and we'd love for you to join us by commenting below.
02:02In closing, what we have experienced of Diablo 3 so far has left us hungry for more. It's dark and atmospheric, with non-stop action and plenty of depth. We'll no doubt be playing this until sunrise, as we're sure many of you will be as well. Thank you for reading.
01:57So we're inside the cathedral now, but sadly we're going to have to wrap this blog up shortly.
01:55Back out in the open, we're heading towards the cathedral. West tested out the Caltrops on the way. It basically slows encroaching enemies down. Nothing spectacular, but useful when there's a horde of zombies bearing down on you.
01:50Looks like we will be going solo from here as Leah is staying behind to scour her mother's journal for clues. Great contribution there, Leah, we'll go and risk our life for your relative who we have never met while you stay behind and read.
01:48This ability is tagged on to the action bar at the bottom of the screen, and activated manually through a mouse click. We'll try it out as soon as we find some more foes.
01:45We've made our way through the ruins to an old abandoned hut, and its into the cellar once again. After taking down yet more zombies we hit Level 4. Our reward is a new defensive skilled called Caltrops, enabling us to set traps for enemies!
01:39Leah is joining us on this mission, which is taking us back through the waypoint to the old ruins.
01:38Back in Tristram, we have 903 pieces of gold to spend around town, but there'll be time for retail therapy later. We're going to dive straight into a new quest instead - helping Leah locate her uncle. We're amazed that he survived the events of the intro.
01:33Completing the quest has unlocked dual wielding, so we can now play around with two weapons at once.
01:29Well that wasn't difficult at all. The Wretched Queen was essentially a stronger version of the Mothers, but nothing a couple of well-aimed Impales couldn't handle. A waypoint will now takes us back to Captain Rumford so we can complete the quest.
01:27We've arrived at the old ruins. Bring on the Wretched Queen!
01:25Diablo 3 will certainly appeal to those with a love for exploration. There are nooks and crannies aplenty to dig into. We've scoured several dank cellars now, some of which housed treasures while others were nests of enemies. It's reminiscent of exploring those caves in the original Legend of Zelda.
01:19We've switched back to the crossbow as our current skillset is optimised for ranged weapons, and let's face it, they're more effective on the undead anyway. All of the Wretched Mothers have been taken down, so we must now make our way to the old ruins for showdown with that Wretched Queen.
01:13We've been accumulating a lot of swag and gold. We're now decked in armour and have several new weapons at our disposal. A Superior Mace is the most powerful of these, so our crossbow has made way for the time being.
01:11It took us back a few paces, but none of our handiwork was undone.
01:08The game kicked us out, but we've managed to log back in without too much fuss. We'll be back in business shortly. Hopefully our progress was saved!
01:04Taking out a second Wretched Mother saw us hit Level Three.
01:03We've encountered a few Quill Fiends too, annoying vermin that fire projectiles at you.
01:00There are zombies everywhere now, and the shrouding mist is obscuring more of the environment the further we venture. There are larger ones coming at us too, but we've just killed our first Wretched Mother. They don't seem any stronger than the larger variety of zombie, though they do vomit a horrible brown substance at you.
00:53Assigning the left mouse button to both movement and attack has its drawbacks. We ran headfirst into a zombie horde when we meant to attack them because we clicked a millimetre wide of our target.
00:50A few thoughts on what we've seen so far. Diablo 3 is very atmospheric, with an unsettling soundtrack and eerie backdrops. The action is fast-paced and engaging, but if we have one complaint so far it's with the control scheme.
00:47Another wave of zombies moves in on us as we head towards our new objectives. Tearing through them with the Impale attack is very satisfying. We're racking up a good haul of gold for our enemy-slaying efforts, as well as some inventory items. We now have a belt and boots, which are both equipped.
00:43Rumford sets us a mission: to kill what are known as the Wretched Mothers and their Wretched Queen, as they are the source of the zombie infestations.
00:39Leah tells us to go and speak with Captain Rumford (the guard leader we encountered at the gates), so we dutifully head off back in the direction we came.
00:37Demons Hunters' attacks are tied to a self-replenishing 'Hatred' meter. Impale consumes 25 Hatred points, while the standard attack we were using only cost two. Should be interesting to see how effective this is.
00:34After locating Leah, we began discussing the fallen star, but were interrupted by another wave of zombies. Leah helps us dispatch them, and the XP points we acquire during the battle bring us to Level Two and unlocks a new skill, Impale.
00:30We're in a tavern called The Slaughtered Calf, which is where we'll supposedly find Leah.
00:29We found a merchant and a healer in the town. Since we have no gold the former is of little use, but the healer gave us a blessing on the house.
00:26A quest marker appears on our map, directing us towards the first mission.
00:26They let us through the gates for helping out. Inside the town there's a pile of burning corpses, and a cart filled with the recently dead. We spoke to some of the locals who inform us that the deceased must be burned to stop them from rising. Standard zombie lore.
00:22We've arrived at the gates of Tristram, where a group of soldiers are attempting to defend the town from waves of the undead. We spoke with the group's leader, telling him we're here to locate the fallen star. He pointed us in direction of the cathedral, and told us to speak to Leah (the girl from the intro). More zombies attack, so we help the guards deal with them.
00:17We made our way along a darkened road littered with corpses. Zombies rose up to attack us, but our Hungering Arrows (automatically assigned to the left mouse button) made short work of them.
00:12With that out of the way, let's dive into the game...
00:12The sequence, told through more hand-drawn stills, gives us some background on our Demon Hunter. It basically explains how he has become quite adept at slaying Hell Spawn, and has travelled to the town of Tristram to investigate reports of a fallen star, the first sign of evil's rebirth.
00:08Another cinematic, beginning with a gritty voice over: "My family was butchered by Hell Spawn."
00:07We're going with a male Demon Hunter. They're lethal and agile, and experts when it comes to setting traps. Plus the chance to wield dual crossbows is very appealing.
00:03So character creation is our first port of call. As you'll probably already know, it's a choice between Barbarian, Demon Hunter, Monk, Witch Doctor and Wizard.
00:01We're in!
23:57The game's servers have been erratic in all territories from the look of things. You can check the status of the server in your continent here.
23:48Well it's taken us far more than "several", but we will persevere. Stay tuned for more updates... some of which will hopefully be about the actual game.
23:46Error 37 is the one we are continually receiving - like many of you, no doubt. Blizzard has the following to say on its support site: "Our servers will send an Error 37 message when they are under heavy load. If you are not able to log into Diablo III and receive an Error 37 message, try logging in again. It may take several login attempts before you successfully connect."
23:36We're going to keep trying to log in, plus we'll bring you any updates from Blizzard as and when they emerge.
23:34Further update from Blizzard: "There's a ton of people in-game playing already, but the initial rush caused something to melt on the initial login/authentication service."
23:27We're not the only ones locked out. Blizzard has issued a statement over on its official forums acknowledging the problem: "EU is live, and the service is looking solid except there are more people attempting to log in than the system can process (which is a lot), which results in an Error 37."
23:21It starts out with some lovely hand-drawn stills, followed by a scene inside a candle lit church featuring two characters, a girl name Leah and her elderly uncle. Leah's uncle, pouring over some old texts, is in the middle of prophesying impending doom when fire stars falling from the sky, and the ground rips open to swallow him up. Guess he was right.
23:16Server congestion means we've still seen nothing of the game beyond the opening cinematic, but we can tell you a little something about that.
23:07Has anyone managed to log in successfully? We are being hit with the 'servers are too busy at this time' error at present.
23:03It's taking its sweet time logging us in here, but with legions of fans worldwide all trying to get through the door at once it is to be expected.
23:01Here goes... just accepting the user agreement. Does anyone actually read these things? We could be signing our house over to Blizzard for all we know.
22:58The game's servers are about to go live. Are you ready to storm the gates of the Burning Hells? We know we are!
22:57Good evening and welcome to our Diablo 3 live blog. We'll be here until 2am posting our thoughts on Blizzard's hotly-anticipated dungeon crawler.

Retro Corner: 'Wolfenstein 3D'
Saturday, May 12 2012, 08:00 BST
By Mark Langshaw, Entertainment Reporter

Now Available On: iOS, PSN, Xbox Live, PC (browser-based)
The first-person shooter (FPS) genre has come a long way over the last two decades. There's an entire generation of gamers out there who think it all started with Doom, but the game that kick-started the contemporary run-and-gun movement came several years earlier in the shape of id Software's Wolfenstein 3D.
In late 1991, designers John Carmack, Tom Hall and John Romero began working on a project that would shape an entire genre for years to come. The trio had previously collaborated on a game called Catacomb 3-D, and its pseudo 3D engine was used as the basis for their next venture.
Wolfenstein 3D was a staggeringly ambitious project. While the three lead developers were no strangers to the third dimension, their previous projects, such as Hovertank 3D and the aforementioned Catacomb 3-D were rendered in 16-colour EGA. Their new game was a mould-breaker, making the jump to the 256-colour VGA palette and incorporating digital sound.

Wolfenstein 3D was an episodic affair, with nine levels in each. The object was to navigate each stage's maze-like corridors in search of the elevator to the next area. Along the way, the player encountered Nazi soldiers of various rank, guard dogs and other foes.
Despite the historic setting, there were fantasy elements to the game. Hitler's diabolical plans involved rearing an army of mutant soldiers, packing serious firepower. The Fuhrer himself made an appearance as the final boss of the original trilogy, albeit decked in a robotic suit packing four mini-guns. There was nothing more satisfying that gunning down the most evil man in history and watching him crumble into a pile of blood and guts.

Wolfenstein 3D should also be credited for starting the level editing craze that gained serious traction when the likes of Doom arrived on the market. Level editors began to circulate shortly after the game's launch, and id released its source code in 1995. Users have created countless DIY stages over the years, a practice that has continued to this day.
Although Wolfenstein 3D's seamless blend of arcade action and adventure-esque maze negotiation was a big hit with fans and critics alike, the game was met with some opposition. It was immediately banned in Germany for its depiction of Nazi symbolism and Adolf Hitler, and was censored heavily when it made its way to the SNES.

The SNES edition wasn't the only port of the game. Wolfenstein 3D was converted for various platforms, including the Atari Jaguar, 3DO and Amiga. The core game was also expanded on with the release of a prequel trilogy dubbed 'The Nocturnal Missions', a novel way of getting more mileage from a title before the days of DLC.
Although subsequent FPS releases from id made Wolfenstein 3D look primitive, its legacy remained strong, and it continued to find its way to new platforms. In recent years, it has arrived on Xbox Live Arcade, the PlayStation Network, and iOS devices.
To mark the game's 20th anniversary this month, it was reissued as a free-to-play browser title on the Bethesda website. It may look rough around the edges two decades on, but this piece of video gaming history is a must-play for any self-respecting FPS fan.

Best 'Minecraft' videos: 'Game of Thrones', 'The Simpsons' - watch
Wednesday, May 9 2012, 10:21 BST
By Matthew Reynolds, Gaming Editor
The continued popularity behind PC indie hit Minecraft lies in its ability to let its users do and create almost anything. To celebrate the release of the Xbox 360 Edition out today, we look at some of the best videos from the community, from full-scale creations to impressive technical feats.
> Read our review of 'Minecraft Xbox 360 Edition'
Guy accidently sets fire to his own home
Probably the most famous Minecraft video, this brilliantly summarises the possible dangers of the game. It sees a user proudly show off a house he painstakingly created, before he accidently burns it down within moments thanks to a misplaced fireplace.
16-bit computer created in Minecraft
One of the more mind-boggling elements is that you can build basic computers within Minecraft itself by creating redstone circuits. This video shows how a field is turned into a calculator. While more recent videos have created computers with more advanced features, this one best presents how it works.
Game of Thrones recreated in Minecraft
George R.R. Martin's fantasy world will be receiving its own game next month, but until then players can check out a recreation of Westeros, including Winterfell and a jaw-dropping King's Landing.
The Simpsons intro in Minecraft
While Game of Thrones has a fine opening, few television shows have matched the brilliance of The Simpsons. This video comes complete with all of Springfield's landmarks and blocky versions of Bart Simpson and company.
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time recreated in Minecraft
Remaking World 1-1 from Super Mario Bros is too straightforward for the Minecraft community, who instead opt for Nintendo's most acclaimed game of all time, down to even the smallest details.
