The system will launch alongside Mario Tennis Open on May 20 in North America. No European release has yet been confirmed.
The Midnight Purple edition joins the Cosmo Black, Aqua Blue, Flare Red, Misty Pink and Ice White variations already available.
It also closely follows the release of the Cobalt Blue 3DS, which launched in Japan in March priced at ¥15,000 (£116).
Nintendo recently announced plans to introduce day-one digital downloads for future 3DS and Wii U releases. Starting with New Super Mario Bros. 2, the scheme will be rolled out from August.
3DS releases will be stored on an SD card but will not be playable on alternative devices.
