It is believed that Sony will delay the announcement until current PS3 stock levels have been reduced.
Sources have also seemingly confirmed the existence of a 16GB edition, which will be based on Flash memory and is likely to cost as little as $99.
Also rumoured are 250GB and 500GB versions.
Images of a console bearing the PS3 branding with what appears to be a sliding panel housing a top-loading disc drive appeared earlier this month.
Rumours of a more compact PS3 emerged after documents that Sony filed with the Federal Communications Commission appeared to show a smaller, slimmer iteration of the console.
Sony is yet to officially announce plans to release a new PS3 model.
