The Pitfall designer claims that Facebook titles such as FarmVille should not be categorised as casual games as they give the genre "a bad name".
He told Game Informer: "If you ask someone what they thought a casual game was a few years ago, they might have said something like Angry Birds. Now they'll probably say something like FarmVille.
"I don't like to lump those social games in with casual games. I think it's those Zynga-like games that give the 'casual' market a bad name."
Crane also suggested that the casual gaming scene is not a new phenomenon, claiming to have been developing titles that could be considered "casual" throughout his career.
"Ten years ago everyone was playing these kinds of games and now everyone forgot they existed just because they're on phones now," he said.
FarmVille is the third most popular Facebook game behind CityVille and The Sims Social.
