The firm revealed details of exclusive content for the platform during its gamescom 2012 presentation, with subsequent reports confirming that the move spells an end to its retro catalogue.
Sony's PS Vita will become compatible with PSOne titles available on the PlayStation Store when software update v1.80 is rolled out on August 28.
New hardware partners for PlayStation Mobile were also announced at gamescom, with Asus and Wikipad joining HTC as providers of PlayStation-certified tablets and smartphones.
The Xperia Play became the world's first PlayStation-certified smartphone when it was released in April 2011. Other first-party devices have since launched with PlayStation-certification, such as the Tablet S and Tablet P.
Other highlights from Sony's gamescom presentation include the announcement of a new IP from Media Molecule called Tearaway, and the unveiling of PS Move titles Puppeteer, Rain and Until Dawn.
