Kerry Washington has landed a lead role in Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained.
Django Unchained tells the story of a slave-turned-bounty hunter on a quest to rescue his wife from a Mississippi plantation owner.
Washington will play the wife named Broomhilda opposite Jamie Foxx as Django.
The Mother and Child actress was an early choice for the role but Tarantino also showed interest in casting an unknown to play Broomhilda, reports Deadline.
However, Tarantino eventually gave the role to Washington.
Django Unchained also stars Christopher Waltz as a bounty hunter who becomes a teacher to Django, Leonardo DiCaprio as the villainous plantation owner Calvin Candie and Samuel L Jackson.
Last week, 50/50 actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt was in talks to join the Django Unchained cast.
Kevin Costner was set to star in the film but had to drop out due to schedule conflicts.
Django Unchained has received a Christmas Day release for 2012.
