Robert Downey Jr was set to play Lex Luthor in McG's cancelled Superman project, according to the filmmaker.
The This Means War helmer told The Playlist that he had secured the Iron Man star's services ahead of his return to Hollywood.

"We had Robert Downey Jr locked up to be Lex Luthor, which I think would have been extraordinary," he said.
McG's Superman was to be subtitled Flyby, based on a screenplay by JJ Abrams. Scarlett Johansson was the favourite to portray Lois Lane and Shia LaBeouf in the frame for Jimmy Olsen.
Man of Steel star Henry Cavill was among the actors screen-tested for the lead role.
Flyby was dropped due to the director's reluctance to travel to Warner Bros' desired filming location of Sydney, Australia due to his fear of flying.
"JJ wrote the script, and we got that to a really good place in the end," he said. "But I'm to blame for [the film not happening]," he added.
Superman will return to cinemas in Man of Steel, opening in cinemas on June 2013.
