Dito Montiel's (A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints) 1980s-set heist film stars Hemsworth as a young man who plans to rob an armoured car depository alongside his childhood best friend.
Johnson plays the NYPD detective pursuing the pair, while Emma Roberts plays a waitress who becomes the love interest for Hemsworth's character.
Deadline released the images, which show Johnson and Hemsworth as cop and robber respectively.
Production on Empire State is ongoing in New York and New Orleans, with a US release date set for June 10, 2013.
