Ocean's second collection - but officially his debut set - picks up where Nostalgia left off. 'Thinkin Bout You' is awash with blurry synths and echoed beats that backdrop the star's refreshing vulnerability: "My eyes don't shed tears, but boy they bawl when I'm thinkin' bout you." It's his ambiguous honesty that fascinates throughout the remainder of the record.
The singer is joined by Odd Future pal Earl Sweatshirt on 'Super Rich Kids', which takes a pop at LA's elite youth culture over tightly-sprung piano, while 'Sierra Leone' hears classic Motown harmonies flanked by modern hip-hop beats. Highlight cut 'Pyramids' injects a welcome dose of electronic house riffs as Ocean likens his stripper beau to both Cleopatra and an Egyptian slave working at an obelisk-shaped establishment.
'Monks' hears Ocean running away with a female love over disco-drenched bass guitar, while he croons an ode to a "buff" American football player on 'Forest Gump' ("You're running on my mind, boy"). His objects of affection may be as complex as his subtle production values, but it results in an intriguing and invigorating collection from one of the world's brightest new talents.
