Ocean, a member of LA collective Odd Future, spoke on his Tumblr yesterday (July 4) about falling in love with a man when he was 19 years old.
Writing on Twitter today (July 5), the 'Remedy' rapper praised Ocean's "honesty", but wondered about what reaction it would get from a music scene focused on "bravado and image".
"Is hip-hop adult enough to deal with frank oceans honesty?" he asked. "Its a weird genre really, often less about the music and more about the bravado and image (sic)."
Noting that "Adele never had to sell crack to sell records", Green finished: "Don't mind me, Just discussing my biggest love objectively."
Ocean has also been backed by Def Jam co-founder Russell Simons, who said that his announcement represented "a big day for hip-hop".
"[Frank's] decision to go public about [his] sexual orientation gives hope and light to so many young people still living in fear," he said.
"These type of secrets should not matter anymore, but we know they do, and because of that I decided to write this short statement of support for one of the greatest new artists we have."
