Speaking to the Metro, Grimshaw said that Misty Eye provides a record of what he got up to in the two years since appearing on The X Factor.
"I fully appreciate the only reason I'm sat here is because I was on the telly but the two years between being 18 and 20 are so mental," the 'Curtain Call' singer explained.
"The things I've written about... there was a lot going on and confusion and getting p*ssed all the time. It's like a journal, I only understand it properly when I listen to the whole album. It's like, 'S**t yeah, that's what I was doing'. It's pretty spot on."
The 20-year-old singer also revealed that the video for his debut single 'Is This Love', which featured a heartbroken man indulging in a drunken a downward spiral, was heavily autobiographical.
"I wanted it to be honest, that's why I wasn't bothered about being in it," he said. "I understood that it would be better maybe if I wasn't."
Grimshaw added that his life has improved following the success of 'Is This Love' and the release of 'Curtain Call', but it is still far from glamorous.
"In reality, I've been sat in my pants watching Bear Grylls,' he said. "Last night, I spent four hours watching the Olympics and eating beans."
