Marcus Collins: 'Seven Nation Army' - Single review

Ever since the international success of Leona Lewis's 'Bleeding Love' and its accompanying album Spirit back in 2007, former X Factor contestants have been encouraged to steer clear of launching themselves with a quick-fix cover in order to pocket themselves a little credibility. However, it seems RCA has chosen not to follow that rule - along with the lucrative run-up-to-Christmas release strategy - for 2011 runner-up Marcus Collins.

In fact, they have gone one step further and handed the Liverpudlian a cover-of-a-cover-version of White Stripes' 'Seven Nation Army' (by Ben L'Oncle Soul to be precise) for his debut single. "I'm gonna fight them off/ A seven nation army couldn't hold me back," Collins sings over a sparkly brass section in his distinctive soul-pop tones that won him a sizeable following back in the autumn. Truth be told, we wish he'd fought a little harder to get one of those eight original compositions he has on his forthcoming record out first.
