Playlist: 10 tracks you need to hear

 |  By and Lewis Corner  |  11 comments
Listen to our ten favourite new tracks this week, including One Direction, Jessie Ware and Dragonette.

One Direction: 'Live While We're Young' (out September 30)
Those who were expecting One Direction to have their serious, coming-of-age moment on their second album will be disappointed by the trailer for their upcoming record, which follows the same template as their previous hits: breezy pop-rock with a chorus catchier than a baseball mitt. RC

Lana Del Rey: 'Blue Velvet' (out now)
Who better to cover the '50s blues classic than Lana Del Rey? The star's sultry tones glide over a dream-like take on the cover, which is all in aid of flogging a few jumpers at H&M. LC

Seye: 'Mexican Bounce' (out October 8)
After supporting the likes of Lana Del Rey and Paloma Faith, Seye is hoping to bring his touring success to the charts with his second single 'Mexican Bounce'. The result is an uplifting, Afro-dance track with a vibrant melody that - as we approach the winter months - is sorely lacking in today's charts. RC

Leona Lewis: 'Glassheart' (album released October 15)
She may be world-famous for her ballads, but Leona proves she can lend her unmistakable falsetto to a grungy, dubstep bassline for her third album's title track. LC

Jessie Ware: 'Night Light' (out October 22)
The Mercury Prize-nominated artist returns after securing a top five placing for her debut album Devotion with 'Night Light', a sultry number with a Sade-meets-Massive Attack inspired music video. RC

Nabiha: 'Never Played The Bass' (out October 29)
Say hello to singer Nabiha, a Danish/African singer songwriter who's already found success in her hometown with four top ten singles and a gold-selling LP. Her first global assault 'Never Played The Bass' is an addictive soul-pop track that, in case it was niggling away at you, samples Womack and Womack's 'Teardrops'. RC

No Doubt: 'Looking Hot' (release date tbc)
The Gwen Stefani-fronted act will release 'Looking Hot' as the second official single from their comeback record Push and Shove. A strutting beat, jumping guitar riffs and a reggae breakdown make this a welcome return for the funky foursome. LC

Jin Jin & The Ragdolls: 'Whistle At Me' (out November 5)
Earworm garage beats are not exclusive to the summer, y'know. Aiming to heat up the colder months, Jin Jin & The Ragdolls offer an infectious melody mixed with a hip-shaking bassline, complete with a "sweet like chocolate" reference. LC

MS MR: 'Dark Doo Wop' (out now)
The latest track to be lifted from their Tumblr EP (yes, there is such a thing), MS MR deliver a hypnotic composition of haunting "doo-wops", angelic vocals and an epic marching beat. They describe their sound as "soulfuzz" and we whole-heartedly agree. LC

Dragonette: 'Live in this City' (release date tbc)
Despite a frustrating lack of chart success in the UK (with the exception of their Martin Solveig duet 'Hello'), Dragonette have valiantly returned with another pop gem in the form of 'Live in this City' - a swizzling, electro-pop number with a chorus Ke$ha wouldn't cock a snook at. RC
