The 'Interactive Urinal Communicators' have been produced by Healthquest Technologies Inc. and are activated by motion.
Talking to The Detroit News, Anne Readette, a spokeswoman for the Office of Highway Safety Planning, said: "We're doing this to draw attention to Fourth of July drunk driving enforcement."
The urinal cakes will say: "Listen up. That's right, I'm talking to you. Had a few drinks? Maybe a few too many? Then do yourself and everyone else a favour: Call a sober friend or a cab. Oh, and don't forget to wash your hands."
Healthquest Technologies Inc. said on its website: "There are many places you can put your ad, but most of them don't guarantee three seconds of attention, let alone a consumer's undivided attention."
