The star said nothing as he arrived at Staines police station just after 1pm to be interviewed about the incident, which is reported to have involved a friend of his ex, Gina Devivo.
Shortly afterwards it emerged that Best was being held in custody at the station.
A spokeswoman for Surrey Police said: "A 59-year-old man was today arrested by Surrey Police officers following an allegation of assault occasioning actual bodily harm against a 34-year-old woman.
"The offence is alleged to have taken place at an address in Ewell, Surrey on June 7."
Best's agent Phil Hughes had earlier said that Best was "categorically" denying the allegations.
"We are certainly denying it categorically that he assaulted this woman and we will be attending the police station to hear their version. He's denying that he punched her, there possibly has been some exchange and some jostling, I don't know."
