The For Coloured Girls actress, who studied anthropology at Cambridge, expressed pride in the hundreds of students from her alma mater who took to the streets back in November.
When asked by the Evening Standard if she would have joined the protests, Newton exclaimed: "God, yes! I think that protest was hugely significant. The government should take into account the fact that people have taken to the streets unhappy and allow that to be part of the ongoing dialogue."
The 38-year-old further lamented the planned public funding cuts for the subjects she holds dear.
"It's always the arts," she bemoaned. "It's the most obvious place to make cuts, but it's also the place everyone goes when they need their broken hearts mended."
Newton previously revealed how she shunned her first film release to study for university.
