Cyndi Lauper has launched Forty to None, a national programme that raises awareness of homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth.
Forty to None, a scheme under Lauper's True Colours Fund that aims to engage the public and support homeless LGBT youth, also released a public service announcement.
Each year between 50,000 and 1.6 million US youths are homeless or runaways with 40% of them LGBT youth, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless.
Lauper said in a statement: "For far too long gay and transgender youth who are experiencing homelessness have not received the attention, resources and support that they desperately require.
"As the first national organisation that works solely to address the needs of homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth, the Forty to None Project will help fill that void and address the challenges experienced by this long-ignored, but important part of our society.
"All of us must join together to stand with America's next generation so that they can stand on their own."
Earlier this month, Carrie Underwood expressed her support for same-sex marriage, joining other celebrities including Brad Pitt and Kristen Bell on the issue.
US President Barack Obama previously revealed that he now supports same-sex marriage after talking to his family, staff and service members.
