'The Office's Rainn Wilson apologises for date rape tweet

The Office star Rainn Wilson has apologised for joking about date rape on Twitter.

Wilson frequently posts gags on his Twitter account, but came under fire from his own followers on Monday for sharing a potentially offensive one-liner.

"If I were ever date raped, I would want it to be to 'Whole Lotta Love' by Led Zeppelin," he wrote.

The actor has since deleted the tweet and penned an apology to anyone who was offended by his remarks.

"Apparently my poorly conceived date rape tweet upset a lot of folks," he admitted. "Not a good topic to joke about. Sorry and won't do that again."

Wilson recently confirmed that he is considering a possible spinoff for his Office character Dwight Schrute, which could air in 2013.

"We are talking about a Dwight spinoff. It could be really cool," he said. "It would be on his farm which would be a bed-and-breakfast and have a crazy menagerie of characters.

"It would be even more far-out than The Office. We're talking about it. It's a good idea. We're mulling it over."

The Office airs Thursdays at 9/8c on NBC.
