Emmerdale's hour-long episode, which focused on Ashley's worsening situation, averaged 5.6m (26.4%) from 7pm. 191k (0.9%) caught the timeshift screening an hour later.
EastEnders, meanwhile, pulled in 5.53m (24.8%) at 7.30pm as Joey provoked Derek's rage.
During the 30-minute clash period between the two soaps, Emmerdale dipped to 5.25m (23.6%). EastEnders later secured a huge 1.09m (5.6%) for its BBC Three repeat at 10pm.
Also on BBC One, Holby City entertained 4.67m (21.3%) at 8pm with Chantelle-centric episode 'Stepping Up To The Plate'.
Hollyoaks attracted 867k (4.5%) at 6.30pm on Channel 4 and 104k (0.5%) on +1 as Brendan pondered revenge against Sampson. E4's first look had 491k (2.4%) at 7pm and 203k (0.9%) on timeshift.
Over on Channel 5, Neighbours grabbed 682k (8.1%) at 1.45pm and 884k (5.9%) at 5.30pm, while Home and Away managed 667k (3.8%) at 6pm and 458k (2.4%) for 5*'s first look at 6.30pm.
