Android could become closed platform, says HP boss

Hewlett Packard (HP) chief executive Meg Whitman has said that Google's Android could become a closed platform in the future.

The HP boss believes that Google's imminent acquisition of Motorola Mobility could force the search engine firm out of the open-source market, Channel EMEA reports.

"I think that Android may end up as a closed system because of [Google's] relationship with Motorola," she said in her keynote presentation at HP's company's global partner summit in Las Vegas.

HP made its WebOS mobile operating system open source in December last year. Whitman believes that there is room in the market for another OS, and is aiming to mould WebOS into a viable alternative to the big two.

"I think there is room for another operating system. iOS is great but it is a closed system," she added.

HP will roll out the full release of Open webOS 1.0 in September this year.
