The high-tech glasses are expected to be powered by the firm's Android operating system, offering a Terminator-style heads-up display (HUD).
An unnamed Google employee told The New York Times that the new hardware will be available sometime in 2012 and "cost around the price of current smartphones".
Sources close to Google claim that the search engine firm is not concerned about turning a profit on the cutting-edge eyewear, viewing the venture as an experiment.
The AR goggles will bring services such as Google Maps and other smartphone applications to the user's eye-level. Previous reports suggested that the device will also feature voice input and output and a front-facing camera.
Google is yet to confirm a specific release date for its AR goggles.
