The US software giant this week announced a new range of tablets running its Windows 8 operating system, as it attempts to compete with Apple's market-leading iPad.
Microsoft did not stipulate the internet connectivity in the products, but Bloomberg today cited "two people familiar with the matter" as saying that the tablets will not support mobile data.
The sources say that Surface will only have short-range WiFi connectivity.
Ever since Apple released the first iPad in 2010, the tablet range has offered a version supporting 3G cellular connectivity. The most recent model, launched in March this year, also introduced 4G, or long-term evolution (LTE), connectivity for the US and Canada.
Ben Bajarin, an analyst at technology consulting firm Creative Strategies, said that limiting the Surface range just to WiFi would enable Microsoft to keep the costs low, but it would also limit the tablets from being used on the go.
"The way that Microsoft is positioning this product - that it's highly mobile but also has the functionality of a notebook - that customer might be more interested in working from any location and not being bound by WiFi," said Bajarin.
But WiFi-only is still the largest part of the tablet market, mostly because the models are cheaper and tablets are largely used by customers while at home, where they have WiFi.
Carolina Milanesi, an analyst at research firm Gartner, said that WiFi-only will not be "a limitation for Surface", as many customers want to avoid costly mobile phone data contracts.
Meanwhile, Microsoft is rumoured to be also working on a smartphone as a way to stimulate the market for devices running its Windows Phone operating system.
