Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system is running on one in ten Android handsets, according to a report.

Install base figures compiled by Android Developer confirm that Android 2.3 Gingerbread remains the company's most used OS with a 64% market share.

Android 2.2 Froyo came in second place on 17.3%, followed by the most recent Ice Cream Sandwich at 10.6%.

Ice Cream Sandwich launched with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus last year, but its roll out to other devices was hit by delays. It comes pre-installed on new high-end smartphones such as the Galaxy S3.

Google unveiled its successor, Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, during its I/O conference last week. The new software will offer a smoother performance, sophisticated voice navigation and the new Google Now information service.

The Android operating system is the most popular in the mobile sector, coming pre-installed on around half of all new devices sold.
