Between 1pm and 11.15pm, live tennis averaged 4.22m (28.6%), with a peak of over 8m tuning in to see Andy Murray progress to the last 16 in the latest-ever finish to a Wimbledon match.
Meanwhile, ITV1 was severely dented by the tennis, with Primeval (6pm) and You Cannot Be Serious! (7pm) sinking to new lows of 1.85m (11.6%) and 1.24m (7.3%). They added 345k (1.9%) and 122k (0.6%) respectively on ITV1 +1.
Movie Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix attracted 2.39m (11.7%) and 271k (1.3%) on timeshift, giving ITV its best audience of the night.
Channel 4 performed reasonably well with Iron Man pulling in 1.17m (5.7%) from 7.30pm and adding 285k (1.4%) on +1. The Million Pound Drop Live followed with a solid 1.04m (5.7%) and 106k (1%).
Elsewhere, a 7pm repeat of The Many Faces of Les Dawson (1.18m/6.6%) was the only time BBC Two topped a million viewers. Coast (972k/4.9%) and The Hollow Crown (726k/3.6%) were screened later on.
Classic episodes of Doc Martin (973k/4.9%) and Lewis (1.18m/5.7%) helped ITV3 beat both BBC Two and Channel 5 in peak time.
Overall, BBC One topped primetime with 31.7% versus ITV1's 9.6% (+1: 1.3%). Channel 4 claimed third place with 5.4% (+1: 1.2%), just ahead of ITV3's 5.2%. BBC Two followed with 4.6%, while Channel 5 had 4% (+1: 0.3%).
