Executive producer Todd Milliner told TV Guide that the former Saturday Night Live star will play "a really fun part" on the show.
"He's playing a comic interest, and he's bringing his full arsenal to the set," Milliner explained.
Lovitz's previous television credits include roles in Two and a Half Men, Friends and voice work on The Simpsons.
Frasier star Peri Gilpin will also make an appearance later in the current season. The as-yet-unknown role will see her reunited with former co-star Jane Leeves, who plays Rejoyla 'Joy' Scroggs.
Gilpin currently stars in ABC Family drama Make It or Break It and has recently featured in episodes of Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Desperate Housewives.
