The Cheers actor joined the cast as the leading star in the long-running CBS drama in July last year.
"It's a great cast and crew and writing. It's great to ride in someone else's hard work," he told ITV's Daybreak. "It means I can be at home in Los Angeles with my children and grandchildren [who live nearby]".
Speaking about his character DB Russell, he said: "He's a mentor, it's a perfect role. I'm 64, that's a mentor age.
"It's a bit of a joke, but yes, I'm now playing [Cheers character] 'Sam Malone sees dead people', that's my character."

"It was a beautifully-written show, the characters were great. I love watching it myself, because everything I get to do, the environmental work and acting work, I owe it all to Cheers."
The actor also reiterated his love for ITV1 drama Downton Abbey, adding that he would prefer to play one of the 'downstairs' characters.
"[I was] heartbroken when it was over. I identify with downstairs. I am a butler in life, I buttle for my family."
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 5 in the UK. The final episode featuring Catherine Willows (Marg Helgenberger) will air tonight (May 29).
