Speaking at Comic-Con, the Kurt Hummel actor said: "Every day I get thousands of emails and Facebook messages saying how much it affected them, and they're so happy that relationship is now on television.
"It's the first time in the history of television that a father like that has accepted his son for who he is."
Show creator Ryan Murphy also defended Kurt's "creepy" behaviour towards Finn Hudson (Cory Monteith) when challenged by an audience member.
"I don't look at that as creepy behaviour," he said. "I look it as a character who is in search of love and makes mistakes, as we all do, but yeah, we are going to revisit that early on in the season.
"I've always thought of the Kurt, Mike O'Malley, Finn triangle as men talking about their issues. We will be doing that."
