Graham acknowledged that some fans "go against" Bonnie because she does not always agree with the vampires, but explained that she is trying to help.
"Bonnie is making an effort and I think Abby [Persia White] is too... to try to keep everyone in the town safe and to try to be there for each other," she told TV Guide.
"How successful they will both be is yet to be discovered or seen, but for right now the effort is being made."
Graham also suggested that there is "always a purpose" for Bonnie's behaviour, adding: "Whether she's wrong or right by audience standards, she firmly stands by it.
"If she goes against Elena [Nina Dobrev], or even Elena going against Bonnie, it would be because they both have this conviction that what they're doing is right. That's important to remember watching the upcoming episodes."
The Vampire Diaries airs on Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
