The executive producer revealed that Damon (Ian Somerhalder) showed a degree of maturity when he chose to hook up with Rebekah (Claire Holt) in last week's 'Dangerous Liaisons'.
"The thing with Damon is, as we've seen, when he's hurt, he lashes out, and in a way, this is the most cruel way he could have lashed out," Plec told Zap2it.
"But it also shows a peculiar evolution in him as a character. Rather than take it out on an innocent person on the road, he's striking where it hurts the most, very specifically, [for] Elena (Nina Dobrev).
"By no means is it gentlemanly behaviour, but certainly it was fun to watch."
Vampire Diaries star Daniel Gillies recently promised that there will be hell to pay after Elijah discovers that his mother Esther (Alice Evans) bound him to his siblings in an attempt to make it easier to kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan).
The Vampire Diaries airs Thursdays at 8/7c on The CW.
